Focusing Your Thoughts on Godly Things
Dear Readers,
Philippians 4:8
And now dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
When Mary shared this verse with me a while ago I knew that this was good advice, not only because it was the advice given from a good friend that I trust, but because it is the advice given from the Lord. I wondered though, how I would be able to apply such things to my life? How do I fix my thoughts on things that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, and worthy of praise?
I discovered the answer to this question a few days ago when I received my devotional from Turning Point. They used this verse for that day and talked about how one would be able to do this, and this is what I learned:
Life is full of troubles, worries, and sin. As Christ-Followers we should want to become more like Christ in the way we act and live our life both inwardly and outwardly. I have not accomplished this to perfection, nor will I ever be perfect in any area like this, but that doesn't mean that God won't stop sculpting me to become more like His Son.
I still have the daily struggles that I must deal with. However, if you are wanting to fix your thoughts on godly things, then make sure that what God has to say is locked away in your heart so that you may open it and remind yourself what God says. A sure way do that is through the memorization of Scripture. This will keep your thoughts focussed on what is right and will help keep sin from clouding your mind with things that are not true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, and worthy of praise.
When you are struggling with the worries and struggles of life then ponder on what God says is the right way to act in a certain situation, or what God says about you. I know from personal experience that saying scripture to myself when I am struggling or afraid calms me and reminds me that God is in control.
My favorite verse, Isaiah 41:10 speaks about how God is there with you and that you shouldn't be afraid for He will give you strength and help. This verse has aided me when fear enters my life. Sometimes my mind will play with me making me imagine things that are not true, or I am afraid and discouraged by things in my life. When I say this verse over and over again it keeps me from letting my fears control me.
Isaiah 41:10 "Don't be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand."
